# The Difference between Cm and Mm

Why we use Measuring Units?

Measurement is significant in life. When we buy something we weigh it or measure it by using different measuring units. Both millimeters and centimeters are terms used to measure quantities. There are certain point of differences between millimeters and centimeters.

See the table:

Centimeter Millimeter Centimeters are abbreviated as cm. Millimeters are symbolized as mm Cm is used for measuring the height of a person, the length of any object and distance. Millimeters can’t measure the height of a person. Mm can measure the thickness of the objects; the diameter of cables, barrels etc, the distances between the two points, the depth of rivers & lakes, oceans and the width of a paper sheet, and for measuring the size of a medicine ETC Cm can be measured by a ruler because Cm doesn’t come in a rounded and decimal value. The smallest measuring line in the ruler is known as millimeters oftenly used in geometry measures. The unit system for centimeter is Metric. The unit system for Millimeters is System International derived unit. Cm is one hundredth of a meter. SO, there are 100 centimeters in a meter Mm is one thousandth of a meter.  So, there are 1000 millimeters in a meter. Cm is bigger to Mm. One cm is equal to 10 mm Mm is smaller to Cm. One mm is equal to 0.1 cm

Let’s understand by taking some Examples

Example of Millimeter (Mm)

1. Let’s take an example of most rainy place in America, ‘Hawaiian island’ where meteorologists recorded 5,080 mm rain & drizzle in latest years.
2. Generally, A pencil point is 1mm.
3. If we look at average Human hair volume , its thickness ranges from 0.016-0.05 mm

Example of Centimeter (Cm)

1. The average human brain is 15 cm long.
2. US passport photo size is 5.0 × 5.0 cm
3. Standard international paper A4 size is 21.0 x 29.7 cm.

It’s clear now that Cm & Mm although both are measuring units rather hold marked differences.
