All locations of North America live in accord with EST in fall and in winter since 2007.

The Eastern Standard Time is the time zone used during fall and winter season. It starts in November lasts to the mid of March.

On the other hand after Mid March clocks cycles back to Eastern Daylight Time which starts from second half of March to the beginning of November. So, these time schedule & strategy is applied with respective to the seasons of summer and winter.

The Eastern Standard Time is 5 hours behind the UTC however the Eastern Daylight Time is only 4 hours behind the UTC.

EDT is an hour earlier to EST. So, EDT can be written as UTC-4 while EST can be written as UTC-5.

EST comes into effect from 2 am of the first Sunday of November.

EDT comes into effect from 2 am of the second Sunday of March.

The Daylight Time strategy is actually applied to enjoy long-time sunlight in summers which in turn, helps in following the increase of daylight time working hours and productivity in return. However, some people claim, that it creates great disruption in sleep cycles. This time zone i.e. EST and EDT needs to be considered in the US as every country in the world does not change time as US does. To conclude its not wrong to say that EST & EDT time zones are identical to each other in many senses still holding menial differences so we can’t use them interchangeably.
