The Difference between Behavioral Health and Mental Health

Mental Health versus Behavioral Health

These two terms are interlinked but hold different meanings. Every individual possesses some predefined mental state that has some inborn or natural psychic patterns but when it meets or confronts society in general or with some people in specific then that individual adopts some cognitive pattern that takes the shape of behavior. Someone’s behavior defines their mental & Physical health.

What is Mental Health and Behavioral Health?

Mental Health is how one Think, Feel, Perceive & Behavioral health is how one’s acts; an observable action. Behavior can be defined in varied categories i.e. it can be optimistic / pessimistic, real/fake, Active/Inactive/, Cautious/Irresponsible, Creative/ dumb, Curious/indifferent, Crazy/ Sensible, Aggressive/Passive, Misanthrope/ philanthrope, Brave/ Fearful, Pious/Vulgar, Extremist/Moderate.

Examples of Mental Health and Behavioral Health

If we take an example of a drug Addictor he might have faced some trauma in society which shattered his mental state & entailed him to develop drug habits for physical & mental ease. While other people when facing anxiety started eating & drinking more or some stopped eating. Anxiety, Depression, and Stress are mental states: however, eating/drinking disorders and language misuse in such mental state depicts behavior. Let’s take a very ordinary example when we look at a child we know who is very polite but suddenly he behaves weird we started thinking that something happened to him that leads to this behavior we started raising questions to him. What happened to you, Are you OK? Did something or someone disturb you? Do you need something? etc. So, in this way we can see how his surroundings/ society create an impact on his behavior (positive/negative) & his answers to the questions will reflect his mental health/ state. We always want to raise our child in a positive learning environment aiming to develop good behavior for his positive mental health.

Points to consider for good mental health:

If we want to understand good mental health, then we have to analyze the following things

  • Ability to express in all Situations accordingly.
  • Ability to Feel, Manage & maintain positive relationships both personally & professionally.
  • Ability to remain intact with any uncertainty/ uncertain happening.
  • How he/she decides & makes choices.

What are common Behavior Issues referred to Behavioral Health?

Common behavior issues are:

  • Being Stubborn.
  • Always be hopeless.
  • Self-harm thoughts obsession.
  • Fear of Changes & challenges.
  • Withdrawal from Relationships both personally & professionally.
  • Eating/drinking/Sleeping Disorder.

Behavior styles impact on Behavior

To understand behavior, it's important to understand behavior styles i.e

  • Some have a controlling style (Authoritative behavior).
  • Some are Submissive. (Who easily accept someone’s authority on them).
  • Some have an expressive style while others are introvert.
  • Some are amiable while others are rude. As said by Lord Chesterfield “Style is the dress of Thought.”  So what behavior style we choose in fact reflects our mental health.

Role of Professionals in Modifying Behavior

Behavioral Health professionals all over the world are providing excellent services such as a psychiatrist, health doctors, rehabilitation officers, and marriage counselors to control, manage & modify behaviors for developing a positive frame of mind in crises targeting to make individuals’ life constructive & to make this world worth living peaceful place.

Role of Natural forces on Mental & Behavioral Health

Almighty has provided us with multiple nurturing forces in the form of Religion, Parents, and Teachers, just we need to submit our heart & soul to their guiding rules & principles which in turn tame our behavior & put a positive impact on our mental health.

It’s is one set of belief that every individual is his psychiatrist, if one makes up one’s mind to learn & apply the best in the world, that can develop productive behavior resulting in healed mental & behavioral health. If we skip ME & start thinking about WE, we cannot bring revolutionary changes in our behavior but it can also bring forth a radical mental state which can drive the world.
